The region consists of the Departments of: Aude, Gard, Herault, Lozere & Pyrenees-Orientales. The traditional Provinces of: Lanuedoc & Roussillon.

Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the 26 regions of France. It comprises five departments, and borders the other French regions of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Rhône-Alpes, Auvergne, Midi-Pyrénées on the one side, and Spain, Andorra and the Mediterranean sea on the other side.

The region is made up of the following historical provinces: 68.7% of Languedoc-Roussillon was formerly part the province of Languedoc: the departments of Hérault, Gard, Aude, the extreme south and extreme east of Lozère, and the extreme north of Pyrénées-Orientales. The former province of Languedoc also extends over the Midi-Pyrénées region, including the old capital of Languedoc Toulouse.

17.9% of Languedoc-Roussillon was formerly the province of Gévaudan: Lozère department. A small part of the former Gévaudan lies inside the current Auvergne region. Gévaudan is often considered to be a sub-province inside the province of Languedoc, in which case Languedoc would account for 86.6% of Languedoc-Roussillon.

13.4% of Languedoc-Roussillon, located in the southernmost part of the region, is a collection of five historical Catalan pays: Roussillon, Vallespir, Conflent, Capcir, and Cerdagne, all of which are in turn included -east to west- in the Pyrénées-Orientales département. These pays were part of the Ancient Regime province of Roussillon, owning its name to the largest and most populous of the five pays, Roussillon. "Province of Roussillon and adjacent lands of Cerdagne" was indeed the name that was officially used after the area became French in 1659, based on the historical division of the five pays between the county of Roussillon (Roussillon and Vallespir) and the county of Cerdagne (Cerdagne, Capcir, and Conflent).

2003 [July] - Mike Crawley - Birding in the Béziers Area

Report

Yes I`ve deliberately put the emphasis on the family aspect of this holiday. My wife is very tolerant of my birding activities and has been on a number of twitches with me in the UK over the last few years. Likewise, my 16-year-old daughter smiles benignly at the Sad Old Man she deems me to be but like her mum has become used to accommodating my foibles. The poor girl has had to suffer holidays to awful destinations like Scilly, Florida and Cyprus to name a few and we`ve always managed to strike a good balance between birding and holidaying. Still they deserve their holiday too and exclusive birding was not on their (or my) itinerary...

2009 [June] - Mike Lockwood - Cévennes

Report

...The views down the gorge were spectacular, although our attention was mostly grabbed by the dozens of Griffon Vultures that were circling overhead. A number of Scarce Swallowtails chased each other in front of where we were standing as Crag Martins flew around the cliffs...

2009 [June] - Rachel & Robin Hamilton - Cévennes

Report

...An assortment of drinks arrived and we were watching the crag martins below us in the gorge when we were distracted by a superb view of two short-toed eagles soaring over the cliffs above us. They performed beautifully, they hovered, they dangled their feet, they showed their pale undersides; everyone had excellent views...

2010 [June] - Honeyguide - Cévennes

Report

...Our first Bonelli’s warbler was introducing itself from a nearby pine tree; it was a bird we were to become very familiar with during the week. There was a blackcap singing too, an intermittent whitethroat and a distant woodlark...

2010 [May] -Dave Parker - Béziers

Report

...a few Crag Martins wheeling high in the air but no sign of any Alpine Swifts which are meant to nest in the area. I also caught sight of 2 distant raptors, which appeared to be Griffon Vultures, but do they roam that widely? Also seen from the ramparts were another Blue Rock Thrush, Garden, Melodious and Subalpine Warblers and a Blackcap...

2011 [June] - Honeyguide - Cévennes

Report

… telescopes were trained on a griffon vulture at its nest site on the cliff, with two choughs in attendance, and then our telescopes were directed to an excellent view of two black vultures – an adult and an enormous juvenile – on their nest in a pine tree across the gorge...
