 birding...

Top Tens

I have visited many tens of thousands of birding sites now in my attempt to create a comprehensive resource for birders everywhere. They vary enormously technically, in design, ease of use and attractiveness as well, of course, as in breadth and depth of content. Of course, what appears below must be a snapshot as websites develop over time, change design and get better or worse depending on your point of view.

Below I feature what I consider to be the top ten website for birders. The one you use and store in your favourites (along with Fatbirder) will vary according to the sort of birding that you enjoy most. I have set them out alphabetically.

Those of you who are not mathematically challenged may notice that there are more than 10 entries below - I'm not one to let maths come between me and my favourite websites.

10,000 Birds

Website

This site started out as Charlie Moores BLOG - Charlie was air crew - great job for a birder, so birded wherever he had a lay over and took great photos... out of this grew 10,000 birds! There are approximately 10,000 bird species on this beautiful planet. Welcome to 10,000 Birds, where, between us, we expect to eventually see every single one. Expect plenty of commentary on natural history, science, politics, conservation, travel, and blogging along the way. Are you fascinated by nature? Eager to travel? Passionate about understanding and observing the world’s birds over a lifetime of exploration? Then this is the site for you!

Bird Tours Trip Reports

Website

A large and growing collection of trip reports from all over - I like the consistent style and how quickly it gets updated....

Birding Hotspots around the World

Website

Tina MacDonald’s site is set out geographically with information on the birds of every country and has a selection of birding links, trip reports etc. She has just started to work on conservation issues – see the South America pages. The links go directly to information on specific birding hotspots around the world, local site guides, etc. Although these links can't replace knowing a fellow birder in the location you're going to, they can certainly help! It’s a great place to visit when yu are thinking about where to go next on your birding travels. This enthusiastic individual has constructed one of the top five birding websites in the world! Fatbirder recommended… in fact its probably my favourite site… apart from Fatbirder of course!

Birdway

Website

Photographs from one of my favourite bird photographers...

Laurence Poh - Digiscoping

Website

Laurence Poh was an experienced photographer and discovered the joys of digital photography with the purchase of a Nikon CoolPix 950 digital camera in 1999. He too, was an avid birdwatcher and was very active with the birdwatching group of the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS). A spotting scope is often used to observe birds from a distance without alerting them of your presence. He sadly dies in the early 21st century...

Oriental Bird Club

Website

A nice clean site - probably in my list more for the birds than the website...

WorldTwitch

Website

Welcome to WORLDTWITCH - a site for world birders. Since there are many websites covering birds and birding in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, Worldtwitch excludes those regions from routine coverage. It is of course impossible to provide comprehensive information about birding in the rest of the world. My goal is modest - to publish or link to useful information about world birding that is difficult to find. I have not attempted to duplicate the detailed reports in the publications of the Oriental, Neotropical and African Bird Clubs or the Ornithological Society of the Middle East and indeed highly recommend that readers join and support those fine organizations.
